a/c & heat pump parts

Compressor

Compressor:  Considered the heart of the a/c system. It pumps the refrigerant thru the system. When this part fails the unit usually gets replaced although if not older than 10 years certainly could be replaced assuming other parts are replaced or in good condition and cost is reasonable. Expect 5-10 years on comp. replacement.

Condensor fan motor: This fan motor sits outside in the weather.  It's purpose is to remove the heat from the refrigerant .  It is a very common motor to fail due to it's location and heat it has to endure.

Cond. fan motor

Blower/evap motor: This motor is inside and operates in the nice cool air stream much less likely to fail in the first 10 years of operation. Occasionally they fail before then but not often.

Blower motor

Contactor: Very important electrical part overlooked by techs alot. When worn they will not make good contact making  compressors and motors run hotter than usual eventually leading to premature failure .

Contactor

Capacitors: An electrical part most susceptible to failure. Good tight connections with proper mounting  will avoid some problems

Capacitors

Thermostats: pretty reliable parts considering the abuse they take. If left at certain temperature and changed once every 6 months they can outlast the entire system. A lot of times they get replaced for dead batteries.
